Pella's emergency response agencies, including the police and fire departments, are partnering to recognize National Donate Life Month in April by displaying special flags, using green lights, and sharing stories to encourage residents to register as organ donors.
Why it matters
Organ donation can save lives, and Pella's emergency responders are using this national awareness month to highlight the impact that organ donors can have on recipients and their families. The campaign aims to inspire more people in the community to sign up as donors.
The details
The Pella Police Department and Pella Ambulance buildings will display special flags throughout April to mark National Donate Life Month. Former Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom, whose wife Susan received a double lung transplant in 2015, is leading the effort and sharing his family's story to remind residents of the life-changing impact of organ donation. Both the Pella Police and Fire Departments will also use green lights to recognize the special month, and Van Gorkom is encouraging anyone with a porch light to do the same.
