The Newton boys track and field team, the defending Class 3A state champions, will be competing in a meet at Central College in Pella today. The team is coming off a strong performance at the IATC Indoor Championships last week, where several athletes placed in the top 10, including a second-place finish in the high jump and a sixth-place finish in the shot put.

Why it matters

The Newton track team is looking to build on its state championship success from last year, despite losing some key seniors. This early-season meet will be an important test for the team as they work to maintain their positive mindset and continue improving throughout the year.

The details

At the IATC Indoor Championships, Isaiah Hansen placed second in the high jump, and Nick Milburn was sixth in the shot put. The 4x100-meter relay team and the 4x60-meter shuttle hurdle relay both finished 10th. While the team lost some key seniors from last year's championship squad, head coach Chad Garvis believes this year's team still has great athletes and huge potential.

What they’re saying

“Hopefully, as a coaching staff, we can keep those guys in a good positive mindset so we can continue to grow throughout the year. That's really it. You can be the fastest guy in the state on day one, but if you are not consistent and don't have a good attitude and work hard all season, you won't be there at the end of the year. Maintaining a positive attitude and getting improvement throughout the year is what really makes a difference in track.”

— Chad Garvis, Head Coach
