The Newton boys basketball team will take on the Van Meter Bulldogs tonight, while the Cardinal girls face the Des Moines North Polar Bears. Both Newton teams are coming off losses at home to Norwalk earlier this week.
Why it matters
These non-conference road games provide an opportunity for the Newton teams to prepare for the postseason by facing unfamiliar opponents outside of their competitive conference schedule.
The details
The Cardinal boys, currently 7-11 on the season, will take on the 13-7 Class 2A Van Meter Bulldogs, who average 61 points per game. Newton head coach Jason Carter expects a tough challenge against the physical Bulldogs. Meanwhile, the 9-10 Newton girls will face the 2-16 Des Moines North team, which averages just 16 points per game while giving up 55 points on average.
- The Cardinal girls' game at Des Moines North begins at 6:15 p.m. tonight.
- The boys' game at Van Meter tips off at 7 p.m. tonight.

What they’re saying
“They are a really tough 2A team. They are super physical. They played Pella Christian down to the wire, and we know how good Pella Christian is. It's going to be a good challenge.”
— Jason Carter, Head Coach, Newton Boys Basketball
“We always like our conference. It's a very competitive conference for us to play in and prepares us well for postseason stuff. But there are nice things about just preparing for a team for the first time this year.”
— Jake Bennett, Head Coach, Newton Girls Basketball
The takeaway
These non-conference road games provide the Newton boys and girls basketball teams an opportunity to face unfamiliar opponents and prepare for the postseason, outside of their competitive conference schedule.
