The Newton girls track and field team is focused on building towards success at the end of May, according to head coach Rachelle Tipton. Last year, the Cardinals had 11 state qualifiers and 5 medalists at the Girls State Track and Field Meet. Tipton hopes to have even more state qualifiers this season.

Why it matters

Track and field is a major source of pride for the Newton community, and the girls' team's success last year has raised expectations for an even stronger performance this season. The coach's focus on developing the team for late-season success aligns with the community's desire to see the Cardinals excel at the state meet.

The details

Coach Tipton noted that while last year's team had a lot of success, some athletes were still disappointed with aspects of their seasons, whether it was not qualifying for state or not making it in additional events. This has fueled the team's drive to improve and qualify more athletes for state this year. The season got off to a good start with three top-six finishes at the IATC Indoor Championships.

  • The 2025 Girls State Track and Field Meet was held on May 22-24, 2025.
  • The next event for the Newton Girls Track and Field team is the Wartburg Indoor Meet on March 24, 2026.

What they’re saying

“I mean, even with all that success we had, I know that there were some athletes who were still disappointed in different aspects of the season. Different ones who were hoping to get to state but didn't, or wanted to get to state in another event as well as the one they did, and didn't quite get there. So I know that they are ready to keep that drive going.”
