The eighth-ranked Iowa City Regina girls basketball team defeated No. 7 Grundy Center 47-36 in a Class 2A regional final. Regina sophomore Addie McLaughlin scored 24 points, and teammate Adalee Klein blocked seven shots as the Regals' defense stifled Grundy Center throughout the game. Regina advances to the state tournament, where it will face No. 2 Rock Valley in the quarterfinals.
Why it matters
Regina's defensive effort and balanced scoring attack propelled the team to its 14th regional-final appearance in the last 15 years, with nine of those postseason runs resulting in state tournament berths. The win showcases Regina's ability to reload and remain a contender despite losing significant scoring from last season.
The details
Regina never trailed in the game, leading 16-12 at halftime before Grundy Center tied it at 16-16 and 18-18 early in the third quarter. McLaughlin then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Regina a 24-18 lead, and the Regals pulled away from there, outrebounding Grundy Center 22-6 in the second half. Regina's Ella Keune hit a key 3-pointer late to help seal the victory.
