Repairs will replace the entire brick shell and roof of the facility

Published on Feb. 25, 2026

A building stabilization project is underway at the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Jail in Iowa City. County officials say the project will manage the replacement of the entire brick shell of the building as well as the roof. The repairs are being done to stabilize the exterior of the building and will require road and sidewalk disruptions throughout the course of the project.

Why it matters

The Johnson County Jail is an important public safety facility, and these stabilization efforts are necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the building. The disruptions to pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the jail will impact the local community during the construction period.

The details

The project will replace the entire brick shell and roof of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Jail building. Pedestrians are asked to use the sidewalk on the east side of South Capitol Street, and those needing access to the main entrance should use the walkway at the north end of the building. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution as the southbound lane of South Capitol Street is more narrow due to cement barriers, and construction vehicles will be frequently entering and exiting the work site.
