According to a report by energy comparison company iSelect, Iowa now generates more than 65% of its electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power - the highest percentage in the country. However, the state's growth in renewable energy has trailed several other states, with South Dakota and New Mexico seeing larger increases in their wind energy shares over the past few years.
Why it matters
Iowa's leadership in wind energy generation is an important milestone, demonstrating the state's commitment to renewable power and its ability to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. However, the slower growth rate compared to other states suggests Iowa may need to further invest in and incentivize wind and other renewable projects to maintain its position as a national leader in this sector.
The details
Data from iSelect shows Iowa's total renewable energy share increased from 59.42% in 2020 to 65.55% in 2024, a 6.13% rise. In comparison, South Dakota saw a 19% increase in wind energy's share of its electricity mix over the same period, while New Mexico had a 17% increase. Iowa's only nuclear power plant, the Duane Arnold Energy Center, is also scheduled to reopen in 2028-2029 after being closed due to damage from the 2020 derecho.

The takeaway
While Iowa's leadership in wind energy generation is a positive development, the state will need to continue investing in and incentivizing renewable projects to maintain its position as a national leader in this sector and further reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
