Central College's TRIO Upward Bound program is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026, making it one of the first programs in Iowa and the nation to receive this federal grant in 1966. The program, along with Central's other TRIO initiatives like Talent Search and Student Support Services, supports low-income, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities from middle school through post-graduate programs.
Why it matters
The TRIO programs at Central College were established in 1966 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, providing critical educational opportunities and support for underserved students. Over the past six decades, the Upward Bound program has helped transform the lives of hundreds of participants, many of whom have gone on to become successful professionals in fields like law, education, and nonprofit leadership.
The details
Central's TRIO grant award encompasses Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services. When the first Upward Bound graduates were recognized in 1971, the program's longtime director, the late Edward S. Banfield, noted that approximately 75% of participants continued their education beyond high school. After 60 years, the current Director of TRIO Pre-College Programs, Kristin Lewis, reports that 79% of participants continue their education beyond high school.
