Iowa State University's iconic Lake LaVerne is set to undergo a comprehensive revitalization project to restore the campus landmark's vitality as a centerpiece of campus life and attraction for visitors. The nearly $5.1 million project is made possible in part thanks to generous donor support, including a $3 million gift commitment from Iowa State University Emeritus Dean and Professor Labh Hira in honor of his late wife Tahira Hira, and a $1 million gift commitment from Iowa State alumnus Dexter Duhan.

Why it matters

The revitalization of Lake LaVerne, a 2.8-acre campus landmark created in 1916, will enhance accessibility and expand the community's use of this iconic location through new features like a lakeside amphitheater and pedestrian bridge. The project reflects the deep connection both the campus community and Iowa Staters across the country have to this cherished part of the Iowa State University campus.

The details

The restoration project will include draining and dredging the lake to remove an estimated 7 feet of soft sediment in some locations, stabilizing the shoreline, modifying the north shoreline to create space for additional seating and an accessible route to the water's edge, and adjusting the shoreline in the southeast corner to create space for a hard-surface plaza. Final designs for new amenities like an outdoor amphitheater, pedestrian bridge, and small outdoor classroom will be completed in the fall.

  • Work will begin in May 2026 to drain and dredge the lake.
  • The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
