The Hawaii Department of Transportation has announced a number of road-related projects scheduled for the week of February 14-20 on the island of Kauai, including single lane closures, full closures, and lane shifts for activities such as grass cutting, tree trimming, and pavement reconstruction. The work is weather permitting and will impact several major highways across the island.
Why it matters
These road closures and lane restrictions are necessary for the state to maintain the island's infrastructure, but they can cause delays and disruptions for residents and visitors traveling around Kauai. Knowing the schedule of these projects allows people to plan their commutes and trips accordingly.
The details
The planned work includes single lane closures on Kaumualii Highway (Route 50) for grass cutting, single lane closures on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) for waterline replacement and grass cutting, a full closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) for concrete work on the Wailua Mauka Bridge, a full closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 560) for paving, and single lane closures on Waimea Canyon Drive (Route 550) for shoulder reconstruction.
- On Tuesday, Feb. 17 from 12 a.m. to 5:30 a.m., there will be a single lane closure on Kaumualii Highway (Route 50) between mile post 6.6 to 8.4 for grass cutting.
- On Thursday, Feb. 19 from 12 a.m. to 5:30 a.m., there will be a single lane closure on Kaumualii Highway (Route 50) between mile post 8.46 to 9.3 for grass trimming.
- From Tuesday, Feb. 17 to Friday, Feb. 20, there will be a single lane closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) in the southbound direction between mile post 4.2 to 4.9 for grass cutting.
- From Tuesday, Feb. 17 to Friday, Feb. 20 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be a full closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) in the southbound direction on the Wailua mauka bridge between mile post 5.7 to 5.9 for concrete work.
- From Tuesday, Feb. 17 to Friday, Feb. 20 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be a full closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 560) between mile post 0.3 to 1.2 for paving.

What’s next
Drivers should check the HDOT website for the latest updates on road closures and lane restrictions, and plan their travel accordingly to avoid delays.
The takeaway
Regular maintenance and infrastructure improvements are necessary to keep Kauai's roads safe and functional, but the resulting closures and lane restrictions can be inconvenient for residents and visitors. Being aware of the schedule allows people to adjust their travel plans and avoid getting stuck in traffic.
