The ABAC softball team held their home opener on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Division II opponent Albany State. The Fillies won the first game 10-0 on a run-rule and survived a close 4-3 extra-innings victory in the second game, bouncing back from losses the previous day against the College of Coastal Georgia.
Why it matters
The Fillies' doubleheader sweep at home against Albany State shows the team's resilience and ability to quickly rebound from a tough outing. The wins also demonstrate the team's offensive firepower and strong pitching, which will be important as they continue their season and look to build momentum.
The details
In Game 1, the Fillies scored four runs in the second inning and six more in the third to cruise to a 10-0 run-rule victory. Sophomore pitcher Tess Rollins threw a shutout, allowing just three hits. The Fillies forced extra innings and won it 4-3 in the eighth on a walk-off single by senior centerfielder Lexi Metts.

What they’re saying
“Definitely Friday was a learning experience. We played a really good, loaded team at Coastal Georgia. We hung with them and hit the ball well, but we just made too many mistakes. I challenged them to play Filly softball today, and I hadn't looked at it yet, but I don't think we had an error today in the doubleheader. We just really bounced back and played our kind of ball.”

“The pitching did really well today. They actually pitched pretty well Friday. We were over in Brunswick at Coastal and had a 20-mile an hour wind blowing out. A lot of balls were deceiving as far as the pitch being well pitched, but they really bounced back today. Tess Rollins comes in and throws a shut out. We turned around with Lindsay Paul, our transfer that came in, and she didn't have her best stuff today, but she battled and battled and went all eight innings. So, I'm very pleased with them.”

“Offense has been really good through the first four games. Coming into this game, I had told them after the big win in Game 1 with the run-rule, 'Just don't put take your foot off.' Sometimes, you do too well early, and then you get kind of complacent, and I thought the team did really good. We came out, scored two in the first, and then let them hang around.”

What’s next
The Fillies will be on the road as they travel to Lake Wales, Fla., to take on Warner University in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 13, beginning at 4 p.m.
The takeaway
The ABAC softball team's ability to bounce back from a tough outing and sweep a doubleheader against a Division II opponent shows the team's resilience and offensive firepower. The Fillies' strong pitching and timely hitting will be key as they look to build momentum and continue their successful season.
