Florida State University student Sarah Langdon and her band will perform at the Bainbridge Little Theatre next Sunday, April 19 as part of the 'Music In The Woods' (MITW) program. The evening will feature tunes from the Big Band era of the 1940s to today's classic hits, appropriate for middle school through senior adults. MITW is a Decatur County-based music program featuring students and faculty from FSU's College of Music, now in its seventh year after being started by Dorothy and Emory Johnson of Climax and retired First Presbyterian Pastor Dr. Jerry Little and his wife, Beverly.

Why it matters

The MITW program provides performance opportunities and financial support for music students from Florida State University, many of whom have daily expenses and needs that are not fully covered by state scholarships. The program has grown from hosting a few friends at the Johnsons' home to featuring over 250 students and 3,600 guests over the past seven years, showcasing the community's interest in live music events.

The details

Langdon's performance will be the final concert of her undergraduate studies, only days before her graduation. MITW schedules concerts in Bainbridge at special venues such as the Bainbridge Little Theatre, St. John's Episcopal, First Presbyterian, and First Methodist churches. The students each receive a stipend towards their educational needs through the support of more than 70 local and Tallahassee-based volunteer financial supporters.

What they’re saying

“We think of those exceptional students attending UGA, Valdosta, or FSU having no financial concerns because of the various state-sponsored scholarships for high-achieving students. Many of the students performing have jobs or family responsibilities outside of their daily school requirements. We forget that many of these students have daily expenses and needs as each of us. The support by the volunteers in many instances is the difference between having daily meals or skipping a day.”

— Emory Johnson, Co-founder of 'Music In The Woods'
