Several top golfers competing in the Masters tournament this year have shared what they would do if they were attending the event as patrons instead of players. Their responses include exploring different vantage points around the course, indulging in the famous food options like pimento cheese sandwiches and peach ice cream, and stocking up on merchandise from the popular pro shop.
Why it matters
The Masters is one of the most prestigious and iconic sporting events in the world, drawing massive crowds of devoted patrons each year. Hearing from the players themselves about what they would enjoy as fans provides an interesting perspective on the unique experience of attending the tournament.
The details
Xander Schauffele said he would "try it all" as a patron, from drinking and eating his way through the concessions to "blowing up the merchandise shop." Viktor Hovland expressed interest in trying to walk with a notable group of players and positioning himself in prime viewing spots like around the 16th green and Amen Corner. Akshay Bhatia highlighted the must-have pimento cheese sandwiches and ice cream as well as the unparalleled quality of the tournament's food and shopping options.
- The 2026 Masters tournament is taking place this week, April 4-10, in Augusta, Georgia.
The players
Xander Schauffele
A professional golfer who has competed in the Masters several times as a player.
Viktor Hovland
A professional golfer who has also played in the Masters tournament.
Akshay Bhatia
A professional golfer who is competing in his first Masters this year.
What they’re saying
“I feel like I would try it all, to be honest. If I'm on the grounds, I'd probably drink everything, try everything. Definitely get the peach ice cream sandwich, all the sandwiches they have to offer.”
— Xander Schauffele, Professional Golfer
“I'd try to walk with a group, but I guess that gets pretty difficult if it's a pretty notable group. I'd want to see multiple different spots. I think 16 green is a pretty nice spot because you can see some on 6 green. You've got 15, so you're kind of in a good spot there. I'd hang around there for sure. And probably around Amen Corner a little bit if you can fit, watch 11 and obviously the approach shot on 12 and some tee shots on 13. But try to walk around.”
— Viktor Hovland, Professional Golfer
“I think it's hard not to go to the merch tent. It's memories for life for your first Masters coming as a patron. I'd buy a bunch of stuff. Yeah, you have to try everything. They do an amazing job with the food here. I eat a pimento cheese sandwich every day after my round. I'm a pimento guy. The ice cream sandwiches are unbelievable. That's something I get after every round.”
— Akshay Bhatia, Professional Golfer
What’s next
The 2026 Masters tournament will conclude on Sunday, April 12, with the presentation of the iconic green jacket to the champion.
The takeaway
The Masters is renowned for its unparalleled patron experience, from the iconic course and architecture to the legendary food and merchandise.
