The University of Georgia is finalizing a deal to hire Larry Knight as the new outside linebackers coach. Knight comes to Georgia after stints coaching at West Virginia, Arkansas State, Temple, and Georgia Tech. He has experience coaching defensive lines and outside linebackers at the college level.

Why it matters

Georgia’s outside linebacker group is a key part of their defense, and the hire of Knight signals the program’s commitment to maintaining a strong defensive unit. Knight’s previous experience coaching defensive lines and outside linebackers at other Power 5 programs should help him hit the ground running in his new role.

The details

Knight, a native of Augusta, Georgia, was most recently the defensive ends coach and run game coordinator at Arkansas State, where he helped the team finish 9th nationally in sacks. Prior to that, he coached the defensive line at Temple for two seasons and the defensive line at Georgia Tech from 2019 to 2022. Knight’s first on-field coaching job was at Georgia State, where he worked with outside linebackers from 2015 to 2016.

  • Knight was hired by West Virginia last month after one season at Arkansas State.
  • He previously coached at Temple from 2017 to 2018 and Georgia Tech from 2019 to 2022.

What’s next

Knight will look to quickly integrate himself into Georgia’s defensive coaching staff and begin working with the outside linebackers ahead of the 2026 season.

The takeaway

The hiring of Larry Knight as Georgia’s new outside linebackers coach continues the program’s trend of bringing in talented young assistants to develop their defensive talent.
