Georgia Tech has fired head basketball coach Damon Stoudamire after three seasons, following a 12-game losing streak that left the Yellow Jackets with an 11-20 overall record and 2-16 in the ACC. Athletic director Ryan Alpert announced the move, thanking Stoudamire for his commitment to the program and saying the school is committed to finding a new coach to build a championship-level team.
Why it matters
Georgia Tech has a proud basketball history, including nine straight NCAA tournament appearances in the 1980s and a run to the national championship game in 2004. But the program has struggled in recent years, failing to make the tournament since 2021. The school is looking to revive its basketball fortunes with a new coach who can return the team to the top of the ACC.
The details
Stoudamire, a former NBA player, was hired in 2023 after a five-year stint as head coach at Pacific. However, he was unable to turn around the Yellow Jackets, who finished last in the ACC this season and missed the conference tournament. Assistant coach Greg Gary will serve as interim head coach while the school searches for a permanent replacement.
- Georgia Tech's season ended on Saturday, March 7, 2026 with a 79-76 loss at Clemson.
