The No. 15 WashU women's basketball team achieved a rare feat by sweeping a weekend series against University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents, defeating No. 23 Emory University and the University of Rochester. The wins have the Bears crafting a strong resume to return to the NCAA tournament for the first time under head coach Lisa Stone's leadership.
Why it matters
Sweeping a UAA weekend series is considered one of the hardest accomplishments in the Bears' regular season, as every conference game is highly competitive. The wins over ranked opponents Emory and Rochester have the Bears positioned well for a potential NCAA tournament berth, which would be their first under Coach Stone.
The details
Against Emory, the Bears overcame a slow start to tie the game by halftime, then used a strong defensive effort in the second half to pull away for a 67-56 victory. Junior center Lexy Harris scored 20 of the Bears' 30 first-half points, while the defense limited Emory to just 36% shooting and 4-of-23 from 3-point range. Two days later, the Bears defeated Rochester 62-55, with junior guard Sidney Rogers providing a scoring boost and the team adjusting its rotation to take advantage of Amelia Rosin's rebounding.
- On Jan. 30, the Bears defeated No. 18 Emory 67-56.

What they’re saying
“Every single game in the UAA is a prize fight. Everyone can beat everybody, any time. And it's just been an amazing week.”
— Lisa Stone, Head coach (studlife.com)
“It was huge that we could dedicate ourselves to playing like Justin Hardy played. He left his sweat and his tears on the court. He was gritty, and we tried to be like that today.”
— Lisa Stone, Head coach (studlife.com)
“With Lexy [Harris] having 20 of our 30 points at halftime, we knew we had to make an adjustment. Thank goodness we started hitting shots from some other people, and I thought Sydney Starks … and [junior forward] Amelia [Rosin] did a good job coming off the bench.”
— Lisa Stone, Head coach (studlife.com)
“Some games, we know they're going to be sucking up on our shooters. But today, they played us really heavy in help [defense], and that eventually our shots would start falling, so it's just a matter of knowing that we put the work in and shooting our shots.”
— Sidney Rogers, Junior guard (studlife.com)
“The good thing is that we were able to win the game in the post. This game went the other direction at Carnegie, so we're getting better.”
— Lisa Stone, Head coach (studlife.com)
What’s next
The Bears will face Emory and Rochester again next weekend, traveling to Atlanta to face Emory on Friday, Feb. 6, and concluding their road trip in Rochester on Sunday, Feb. 8.
The takeaway
The Bears' weekend sweep of ranked UAA opponents Emory and Rochester has them well-positioned for a potential NCAA tournament berth, which would be their first under Coach Stone's leadership. The team's gritty, team-first effort and defensive intensity have them building momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
