After filing for bankruptcy, Saks Global has decided to close nearly all of its Saks OFF 5TH discount stores, including two locations in metro Atlanta. Only 12 Saks OFF 5TH stores will remain open, while the Woodstock and Lawrenceville stores in the Atlanta area are among the 57 locations that will be shuttered nationwide.

Why it matters

The closures are part of a broader restructuring by Saks Global after it acquired the debt-laden Neiman Marcus chain. The move reflects the challenges facing traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, especially discount stores, as they compete with the rise of e-commerce and changing consumer shopping habits.

The details

Saks OFF 5TH's Lawrenceville store at Sugarloaf Mills will start holding closing sales on January 31, while the Woodstock location at The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta will close on February 2. All Neiman Marcus Last Call discount stores are also scheduled to close as part of the Saks Global restructuring.
