The 14th-ranked Florida Gators led from start to finish in an 86-66 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday night. Xaivian Lee scored 18 points and the Gators shot 10-of-26 from 3-point range to cruise to the win. Florida built a 43-27 halftime lead and never looked back, with four players scoring in double figures. Georgia was missing leading scorer Jeremiah Wilkinson due to a shoulder injury and struggled to keep up with the Gators' firepower.
Why it matters
The Gators are now alone atop the SEC standings, having won 9 of their last 10 games. This victory continues their strong push towards March Madness as the reigning national champions. For Georgia, the loss is a setback as they try to build an NCAA Tournament resume without their top scorer Wilkinson.
The details
Florida scored the first 10 points of the game and led by as many as 20 in the first half. The Gators' defense set the tone early, with Alex Condon blocking what looked to be a sure dunk by Georgia's Blue Cain. Florida's 3-point shooting, which has been a weakness, improved as they hit 10-of-26 from deep. Boogie Fland hit a desperation 3 to push the lead to 22 points in the second half, prompting many Georgia fans to head for the exits. The Bulldogs did make a late push to cut the deficit to 10, but Lee hit a 3-pointer to quell the comeback attempt.
