A 32-year-old home health aide in West Palm Beach, Florida has been arrested and charged with grand theft from a person 65 years of age or older and dealing in stolen property. Police say Andrassy Nash Kersaint stole thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry, including a $6,500 gold coin and diamond engagement ring, from her elderly client and pawned the items at a local shop.
Why it matters
This case highlights the vulnerability of elderly residents and the need for stronger safeguards and oversight when it comes to in-home caregivers. It also raises concerns about the ease with which stolen goods can be fenced through pawn shops, even when the perpetrator is caught on video.
The details
According to the police report, Kersaint was hired to care for the victim's husband. On February 9, the victim contacted police after discovering her jewelry drawer had been ransacked and several valuable items were missing, including a platinum diamond earring set, a $20 gold coin, a diamond and sapphire engagement ring, and other gold and gemstone jewelry. An investigation led detectives to a local pawn shop, where they found Kersaint had pawned the stolen items for $2,000 on the same day they were taken. When confronted, Kersaint allegedly claimed she was 'trying on' a bracelet and forgot to take it off, and asked why she went for jewelry instead of cash since she could get more money for the jewelry. She later returned the diamond earrings, swearing on her 'sick son's life' that those were the only items she took, but police say pawn records and victim statements tell a different story.
