British Airways is making major changes to its London to Tampa service, as the route will transition from Gatwick to Heathrow Airport in late 2026. The airline will operate the route 5 times weekly using a Boeing 787-10 aircraft, which has a more premium cabin configuration compared to the current Boeing 777-200ER.
Why it matters
The shift from Gatwick to Heathrow will provide Tampa passengers with better connectivity to British Airways' extensive global network, rather than just the more limited leisure-focused routes out of Gatwick. The new 787-10 aircraft will also offer a more modern and premium onboard experience, including the airline's latest business class suites.
The details
Currently, British Airways operates daily service between London Gatwick and Tampa using a Boeing 777-200ER. This will continue until October 24, 2026. Then, starting October 25, 2026, the route will shift to 5 weekly flights between London Heathrow and Tampa, operated by a Boeing 787-10. The new schedule will be: BA211 London Heathrow to Tampa departing 12:45PM arriving 5:30PM, and BA210 Tampa to London Heathrow departing 7:55PM arriving 9:15AM (+1 day). The 4,411-mile flight will be blocked at 9hr45min westbound and 8hr20min eastbound.
- British Airways has been flying to Tampa since 1985.
- The current Gatwick to Tampa service will continue until October 24, 2026.
- The new Heathrow to Tampa service will begin on October 25, 2026.
The players
British Airways
A major international airline and flag carrier of the United Kingdom.
Tampa International Airport (TPA)
The main airport serving the Tampa Bay area in Florida.
London Heathrow Airport (LHR)
One of the busiest airports in the world and a major hub for British Airways.
London Gatwick Airport (LGW)
The second-busiest airport in the UK, used by British Airways for some of its more leisure-oriented routes.
Virgin Atlantic
A British airline that also operates flights between London Heathrow and Tampa.
What they’re saying
“Now, it's important to acknowledge that this is a significant capacity downgrade. We're going from 2,324 seats per week, to 1,280 seats per week, as we're seeing a reduction in frequencies, plus a lower capacity plane.”
— Ben Schlappig, Author (onemileatatime.com)
“That being said, I'd consider this to be massively positive for passengers. For one, the 787-10 is much more modern and with a better hard product, so Tampa will finally get business class suites. More importantly, though, this means that British Airways' Tampa flight will finally feed into British Airways' massive network out of Heathrow, rather than the limited leisure focused network out of Gatwick.”

What’s next
British Airways will continue operating the current Gatwick to Tampa service until October 24, 2026. The new Heathrow to Tampa route will begin on October 25, 2026.
The takeaway
The shift of British Airways' Tampa flight from Gatwick to Heathrow is a major upgrade for passengers, providing better connectivity to the airline's global network and a more premium onboard experience, despite a temporary capacity reduction. This change demonstrates British Airways' commitment to the Tampa market and its desire to offer a more compelling product for both UK and US-originating travelers.
