Due to expected windy conditions, the organizers of the Gasparilla pirate festival in Tampa have decided to shorten the flotilla route this year, similar to what they did in 2022. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will have 77 vessels from 40 different agencies on the water to monitor safety, and they are warning novice boaters to stay off the water and consider celebrating on land instead.
Why it matters
The Gasparilla festival is a major annual event in Tampa that draws large crowds both on the water and on land. Shortening the flotilla route due to weather concerns helps ensure the safety of participants, while the increased law enforcement presence aims to prevent any incidents on the water.
The details
Typically, the Gasparilla flotilla leaves from Ballast Point Park and travels across Hillsborough Bay before going up the Seddon Channel to the Tampa Convention Center. This year, the flotilla won't go across Hillsborough Bay at all and will instead start closer to the Seddon Channel, eliminating any travel across open waters. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister is advising people to stay off the water and enjoy the festivities from land, and he is reminding boaters not to drink while operating vessels.
- The Gasparilla flotilla will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
- The flotilla route was also shortened due to weather concerns in 2022.

What they’re saying
“My advice would be to stay off the water this year and enjoy it by land. If you decide to come out, make sure that you give yourself plenty of room in between boats. We see every year where inexperienced and novice boaters get a little too close, and we're playing bumper boats out there.”

“Under no circumstances, as an operator in any vessel out here, under any condition, should you ever be consuming alcoholic beverages, especially this weekend when it's going to be as challenging as we expect it to be.”

What’s next
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will be closely monitoring the Gasparilla flotilla on Saturday, January 31, 2026 to ensure the safety of all participants.
The takeaway
The Gasparilla festival is a beloved Tampa tradition, but organizers and law enforcement are taking precautions this year to prioritize safety due to expected windy weather conditions. By shortening the flotilla route and increasing on-water patrols, they hope to allow people to enjoy the festivities while minimizing risks.
