Florida State is losing another player to the NCAA transfer portal, as freshman guard Maximo Garcia-Plata, a native of Madrid, Spain, will enter his name in the portal after redshirting the 2025-26 season. The Seminoles are projected to have as many as seven roster spots to fill this offseason as they look to build off a strong finish to the year under new head coach Luke Loucks.

Why it matters

With six seniors departing and several other players entering the transfer portal, Florida State will have significant roster turnover to manage this offseason. The departure of Garcia-Plata, a 6'4" guard with international experience, opens up another scholarship spot for the Seminoles as they look to add 3-5 new players through the transfer portal to complement their incoming freshman class.

The details

Garcia-Plata, who signed with FSU last August, ended up redshirting the 2025-26 season as the coaching staff wanted to give him time to adjust to the college game. Despite his international experience, they felt he needed a year to develop. With a crowded backcourt that includes incoming freshmen Martay Barnes and Jasen Lopez, as well as Brandon Bass Jr. who can play both guard spots, the staff decided it was best for Garcia-Plata to explore other options.

  • Garcia-Plata signed with Florida State in August 2025.
  • Garcia-Plata redshirted the 2025-26 season.
  • The NCAA transfer portal opened on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
