The Sarasota Police Department is remembering an officer who was killed in the line of duty 51 years ago. A memorial wreath has been placed near his photo inside police headquarters, and the department said 'his sacrifice is not forgotten' and continues to shape the agency's values and commitment.
Why it matters
Honoring fallen officers is an important way for police departments to remember the risks and sacrifices that come with the profession, and to reaffirm their dedication to public safety and serving the community.
The details
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Officer Jones, 25, was shot and killed with his own weapon while struggling with a man who was stealing gas from an industrial facility. The suspect was able to gain control of Jones' revolver during the struggle, shoot him in the chest, and then beat him with a police flashlight before fleeing. Jones was able to call for help but succumbed to his wounds 90 minutes later at the hospital. The suspect later committed suicide.
