Rory McIlroy withdrew from the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday due to muscle spasms in his back that were not improving. The spasms were not thought to be serious enough to keep him out of next week's Players Championship, where he is the defending champion. However, the withdrawal comes as golf enters a busy stretch leading up to the Masters, where McIlroy will look to defend his title and complete the career Grand Slam.
Why it matters
McIlroy's withdrawal is concerning as he approaches a critical part of the golf season, including the defense of his Masters title. Any back issues could impact his preparation and performance at the year's first major championship.
The details
McIlroy withdrew about 30 minutes before his tee time on Saturday. One of his managers said he experienced muscle spasms that were not going away as he tried to warm up. This is only the third time in his career that McIlroy has been forced to withdraw from a tournament, with previous withdrawals due to a flu virus and food poisoning in 2009, as well as a sore wisdom tooth in 2013.
