Brevard County law enforcement has issued hundreds of citations since a crackdown on reckless driving began on a 72-mile stretch of Interstate 95 in January. The joint effort between the Brevard County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol has already reduced accident rates along the highway, which has been labeled one of the deadliest in the country.
Why it matters
The I-95 corridor in Brevard County has seen a high number of fatal crashes in recent years, prompting law enforcement to take action. This crackdown aims to improve safety and save lives on one of Florida's major north-south traffic arteries.
The details
In the first three weeks of the 'This is The Only Warning You're Getting' initiative that began on Jan. 5, the sheriff's office issued 701 citations, including 500 for excessive speeding. Florida Highway Patrol troopers handed out another 230 citations, including 3 for violating the state's 'super speeder' law. An additional 112 motorists were ticketed for failing to obey the Move Over law.

What they’re saying
“Currently, Brevard County's 72-mile stretch of I-95 has unfortunately been labeled one of the deadliest areas of interstate in the entire country and starting right now, that changes.”
— Wayne Ivey, Brevard County Sheriff (floridatoday.com)
“Unfortunately, over the years, we have seen many state troopers, other law enforcement officers, and service professionals injured or killed by someone not giving them the room to work. These are preventable crashes that not only take our officers away from their families, but it also takes members of our communities, who gave freely to make Florida a safer place to live and travel. Please remember to slow down and move over. Lives depend on it.”
— Dave Kerner, Florida Department of Highway Safety Director (floridatoday.com)
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This crackdown on reckless driving along I-95 in Brevard County highlights the ongoing efforts to improve safety on one of Florida's most dangerous highways. The initiative aims to reduce accidents and save lives through increased enforcement and education.
