The 2026 World Baseball Classic will feature several rule changes to align the international tournament with Major League Baseball's pace-of-play initiatives. Games will maintain the traditional nine-inning format, but a pitch clock and "mercy rule" stoppages have been introduced to prevent lengthy, lopsided contests and protect pitching staffs. The pitch clock requires pitchers to deliver the ball within 15-18 seconds, while a 15-run after 5 innings or 10-run after 7 innings mercy rule will end pool play games early if a team builds a large lead.

The details

For the first time, the World Baseball Classic will utilize a pitch clock, requiring pitchers to deliver the ball within 15 seconds with the bases empty and 18 seconds with runners on. Batters must also be alert and in the box with 8 seconds remaining on the timer, or they risk an automatic strike. Additionally, strict pitch count limits will be enforced, capping pitchers at 65 pitches in the first round, 80 in the quarterfinals, and 95 in the championship. If a pitcher reaches their limit mid-at-bat, they can finish facing that batter. To prevent marathon extra-inning games, a "ghost runner" will be placed on second base starting in the 10th inning. Finally, a mercy rule will end pool play games early if a team leads by 15 runs after 5 innings or 10 runs after 7 innings, though this rule is removed in the knockout stages.
