The list includes a mix of talented underclassmen and experienced seniors who led their teams to successful seasons.
Why it matters
The Player of the Year award is one of the top individual honors in high school sports, recognizing the most dominant and impactful players in the region. These players not only put up impressive stats, but also led their teams to deep playoff runs and set new program records.
The details
The list of Player of the Year candidates includes a pair of freshmen sensations in Amaya Boyer and Amara Rodgers, who both had standout debut seasons. Seniors like Jensen Beach's Rylee Fitzwater, Treasure Coast's Jayla Flynn, and St. Lucie West Centennial's Jayla Williams also made strong cases with their all-around play. Other players like Vero Beach's Kyla Wallace and Lincoln Park Academy's Layla Walker made major impacts as underclassmen.
- The all-area awards are set to be revealed later this month and into the first week of April.
- The winter high school athletic calendar wrapped up early with the St. Lucie West Centennial girls basketball team breaking a 24-year drought with a state semifinal appearance.
The players
Amaya Boyer
A 5-foot-10 freshman guard for Vero Beach, Boyer increased her scoring by 10 points from her eighth-grade season and led the Greyhounds to the Region 3-3A Final. She averaged 18.4 points per game while shooting 53% from the field, 43% from three-point range, and 92% from the free throw line.
Rylee Fitzwater
The senior guard for Jensen Beach put up career-best averages in points (16.9), rebounds (3.3), assists (2.9) and steals (3.2) to help the Falcons reach the regional quarterfinals. She reached the 1,000-career point milestone during the season.
Jayla Flynn
The senior wing and team captain for Treasure Coast paced the Titans in scoring (16.0 ppg), shooting percentage (47%) and rebounding (8.9) as the team reached the regional final for the first time since 2014.
Amara Rodgers
The freshman guard for Somerset College Prep averaged a staggering 32.5 points per game on 48% shooting, helping transform a struggling program into a 20-win team. Her scoring average would rank third nationally if extrapolated to 32 minutes per game.
