NC State football coach Dave Doeren has made a concerted effort to strengthen the team's tight end and wide receiver units through the transfer portal. The Wolfpack brought in three transfer tight ends, including a redshirt junior from Montana State, as well as five wide receiver transfers, including a highly-touted Miami wideout. The goal is for junior quarterback C.J. Bailey to build chemistry with his new pass-catching targets.
Why it matters
Tight end and wide receiver were identified as areas of need for the Wolfpack after significant departures from those position groups. Doeren and his staff worked aggressively in the transfer portal to reload at those key offensive positions, aiming to provide Bailey with a talented group of receivers to target in the passing game.
The details
At tight end, NC State landed transfers Hunter Provience from Montana State and Vander Ploog from Oregon, as well as three other players. On the outside, the Wolfpack added five wide receiver transfers, including Joshisa Trader from Miami, Victor Snow from Buffalo, Tyran Warren from Alcorn State, Davion Dozier from Appalachian State, and Chance Robinson from Miami. Many of these new additions have significant game experience at the FBS level.
- The transfers joined the NC State program ahead of the 2026 season.
The players
Dave Doeren
The head football coach at NC State, tasked with rebuilding the Wolfpack's tight end and wide receiver units through the transfer portal.
C.J. Bailey
The junior quarterback at NC State who will look to build chemistry with the team's new pass-catching targets.
Joshisa Trader
A highly-touted wide receiver transfer from Miami, ranked as the No. 68 overall player in the class of 2024 by On3.com.
Victor Snow
A fifth-year senior wide receiver transfer from Buffalo, where he caught 62 passes for 815 yards and 8 touchdowns last season.
Hunter Provience
A redshirt junior tight end transfer from Montana State, where he was part of a national championship team.
What they’re saying
“The staff did a really good job. C.J., he needs all the reps he can get with these guys right now, and [sophomore quarterback] Will [Wilson], just to build that chemistry because those two positions, as you know, in the pass game were paramount.”
— Dave Doeren, Head Coach (on3.com)
“It was an area of high need. A year ago, it was on the D-Line, trying to get more edge players. This year, with what we lost in the those two rooms [tight end/wide receiver] there was a magnified approach because of how many good players have left the program. It is fun to see these guys now.”
— Dave Doeren, Head Coach (on3.com)
What’s next
The new-look NC State offense will look to build chemistry and develop timing during spring practice and summer workouts ahead of the 2026 season.
The takeaway
By aggressively addressing needs at tight end and wide receiver through the transfer portal, NC State coach Dave Doeren has positioned the Wolfpack to potentially field a more dynamic passing attack in 2026 and beyond.
