Mar. 22, 2026 at 3:23pm

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reassigned infielder Konnor Griffin, rated the No. 1 overall prospect in Major League Baseball, to their minor league camp. Griffin, who was selected 9th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, posted a .171 batting average with four home runs and nine RBIs this spring. The Pirates also optioned several other players to Triple-A Indianapolis and reassigned additional players to minor league camp as they finalize their Opening Day roster.

Why it matters

The decision to send their top prospect to the minors is a significant move by the Pirates as they look to build a competitive roster for the 2026 season. Griffin was expected to compete for a starting job, so his demotion signals the team may want him to get more seasoning at the Triple-A level before bringing him up to the majors.

The details

In addition to reassigning Griffin, the Pirates optioned C/1B Rafel Flores Jr., RHP Cam Sanders, OF Jhostnyxon Garcia, and INF/OF Tyler Callihan to Triple-A Indianapolis. They also reassigned RHP Chris Devenski, RHP Carson Fulmer, LHP Joe La Sorsa, and INF Alika Williams to minor league camp. The Pirates currently have 28 players remaining in Major League camp.

  • The Pirates will open the 2026 regular season on Thursday, March 27 at 1:15 PM on the road against the New York Mets.
