Researchers from Florida Atlantic University developed a video training program to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) recognize appropriate versus inappropriate romantic behaviors across in-person and online interactions. The study found the video modeling intervention significantly improved participants' decision-making skills, with accuracy jumping from 20% to 76% during the training. While mastery levels dipped slightly after the intervention, participants still performed far above baseline, averaging 83% accuracy.
Why it matters
For too long, individuals with IDD have faced societal, familial and institutional barriers that restrict their opportunities for love, romance and sexual expression. This study highlights the importance of providing inclusive, evidence-based education on relationships and sexuality as a matter of dignity, equality and the fundamental right to love.
The details
The researchers developed an 80-video training program depicting appropriate and inappropriate romantic scenarios. Participants viewed selected videos and practiced responding using a 10-step task analysis. The study found the video modeling significantly improved participants' decision-making skills across in-person verbal, in-person physical, online verbal, and online physical interactions. Social validity results showed the program fostered meaningful discussions, empowered decision-making, and improved communication about relationships and intimacy.
- The study was published in the journal Sexuality and Disability in 2026.

What they’re saying
“Romantic and sexual education is not a luxury – it is a fundamental aspect of dignity and independence for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This study shows that with the right tools, these individuals can learn to navigate complex relationship situations safely and confidently.”

What’s next
The researchers suggest this video modeling approach can serve as a model for inclusive sexual education, ensuring all individuals have the knowledge and skills to embrace healthy relationships.
The takeaway
This study challenges societal misconceptions that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities do not desire or deserve meaningful romantic and sexual experiences. By providing accessible, evidence-based education, these individuals can learn to navigate complex relationship situations safely and confidently.
