The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for three models of Vive Health adult bed rails, totaling around 122,000 units, after two reported deaths linked to entrapment hazards. The recalled bed rails were sold nationwide through medical supply stores, the Vive Health website, Amazon, and other online retailers.
Why it matters
Bed rails are intended to provide stability and safety for elderly or mobility-impaired users, but these recalled models pose a serious risk of entrapment and asphyxiation. The deaths of two elderly men highlight the need for rigorous safety standards and oversight of medical devices marketed to vulnerable populations.
The details
The recalled bed rail models include the Vive Health Compact Bed Rail (model LVA2009SLV), Bed Rail Collection V (model LVA2097SLV), and units of the Vive Health Bed Rail model LVA1024 purchased on or before August 21, 2023. Vive Health previously recalled units of model LVA1024 purchased after that date in February 2026. The recalled bed rails are made of silver or white metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip handle, and may not contain model numbers or brand-specific labels.
- In September 2024, a 97-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Texas died due to entrapment in one of the recalled bed rails.
- Also in September 2024, a 93-year-old man at his home in Florida died due to entrapment in one of the recalled bed rails.
The players
Vive Health
The manufacturer of the recalled bed rails, which are sold through medical supply stores, the company's website, Amazon, and other online retailers.
Consumer Product Safety Commission
The federal agency that issued the recall for the Vive Health bed rails after receiving reports of two deaths linked to entrapment hazards.
What’s next
Consumers who have purchased the recalled Vive Health bed rails should contact the company immediately to receive a full refund. Vive Health can be reached by phone, email, or through their website.
The takeaway
This recall highlights the importance of rigorous safety testing and oversight for medical devices, especially those intended for vulnerable populations like the elderly. Consumers should be vigilant about product safety and promptly report any issues or incidents to the appropriate authorities.
