As the war with Iran enters its fourth week, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis said the Trump administration must make its objectives of the operation clearer before Congress approves additional funding. Tillis praised last summer's 'Operation Midnight Hammer' but said the current weeks-long operation is 'ambiguous' and he doesn't know the 'long-term strategic goals'.
Why it matters
The war with Iran has led to a blockage of the critical Strait of Hormuz, causing a surge in global oil prices. Tillis warned that the U.S. can't simply 'walk away' from the region, arguing it would harm U.S. allies whose economies depend on the strait being open.
The details
Tillis said he generally supports what the president is doing in Iran, but he needs to know the administration's long-term strategic goals before approving the $200 billion supplemental funding request from the Pentagon. The senator also pushed back on Trump's criticism of NATO allies for not assisting more in opening the Strait of Hormuz, saying they weren't consulted on the major military operation.

What they’re saying
“What is the objective, the primary objective?”
— Jonathan Karl, ABC News 'This Week' co-anchor
“I don't know, and I think it's a real problem.”
— Sen. Thom Tillis
“We have a number of partners and allies in the region whose economic fortunes rests on the Strait of Hormuz being open. We've decided that we're going to project power and try and produce good outcomes in the Middle East. You can't all of a sudden walk away after you've kind of created the event and expect other people to pick it up and leave — and leave a good taste in their mouth.”
— Sen. Thom Tillis
