Glenfarne Group, the majority owner and developer of the Alaska LNG project, and TotalEnergies have signed a letter of intent for TotalEnergies to offtake 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Alaska LNG project. The agreement was signed in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. and witnessed by U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan and Congressman Nick Begich of Alaska.
Why it matters
The Alaska LNG project provides a unique Pacific orientation that complements TotalEnergies' supply strategy and gives Asian customers direct access to U.S. natural gas. This deal adds another major global energy company as a partner in the project, which is working to contract 80% of its 20 MTPA capacity to finance the development.
The details
Under the agreement, TotalEnergies will offtake 2 MTPA of LNG from the Alaska LNG project. Glenfarne, the majority owner and developer of the project, has now secured 13 MTPA of preliminary long-term agreements with companies including JERA, Tokyo Gas, CPC, PTT, and POSCO. The Alaska LNG project consists of an 807-mile, 42-inch pipeline to deliver natural gas from Alaska's North Slope for both domestic use and LNG export.
