BMW is recalling nearly 60,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential fire risk linked to the air conditioning system. The electrical wiring harness for the A/C system may become damaged during cabin air filter replacement, which could lead to a short-circuit and increase the risk of a fire. Affected models include certain 2025 M5 Sportswagon and M5, 2024-2025 750e xDrive, 2025-2026 550e xDrive, 2023-2025 i7 and 7 Series, and 2024-2026 i5 and 5 Series vehicles.
Why it matters
This recall highlights the importance of proper maintenance and safety checks for automotive electrical systems, which can pose serious fire hazards if not properly addressed. BMW's proactive response to this issue helps mitigate the risk to vehicle owners and demonstrates the company's commitment to safety.
The details
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers 58,713 vehicles. BMW estimates that fewer than 1% of the recalled vehicles are affected, and as of February 19, the company has reported no crashes or injuries related to the issue. Dealers will inspect the wiring harness, replace it if necessary, and install a retaining strap or bracket at no cost to owners.
