Rep. Aaron Bean, a key architect of one of the GOP's proposals to replace the now-expired enhanced Obamacare subsidies, has lamented that progress on healthcare reform has stalled due to a lack of consensus among Republican lawmakers. Bean is hoping to help inspire Republicans to get healthcare reform talks back on track by convening discussions and debates among healthcare policy experts in his 'Path to Consensus Series'.
Why it matters
The enhanced Obamacare subsidies expired last year after Congress deadlocked over how to extend them. This has left a gap in healthcare coverage and affordability for many Americans. Bean's efforts to bring Republicans together and find consensus on a replacement plan could have significant implications for the future of healthcare policy in the U.S.
The details
Bean teamed up with Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas) last year to roll out the More Affordable Care (MACA) Act, which would take federal healthcare subsidies and funnel them into 'Trump Health Freedom Accounts' for Americans to spend as they wish. However, Republicans were split over the details and weren't able to come up with something that could clear the 60-vote filibuster threshold in the Senate. Bean believes the key to successful healthcare reform will be giving consumers more choice and competition.
- The enhanced Obamacare Premium Tax Credits, which cost about $30 billion annually, were implemented in the Inflation Reduction Act that passed in 2022 but were only in effect for three years.
- Bean held part one of his 'Path to Consensus Series' last year to debate the enhanced Obamacare subsidies.
- Bean convened part two of his 'Path to Consensus Series' last Thursday for a discussion on the 340B Drug Pricing Program and site-neutrality.

“My crystal ball says Obamacare is here to stay. We know it's not affordable, sustainable, or in the long-term interest of individuals because it doesn't give us the best results.”
— Rep. Aaron Bean (nypost.com)
“Consumers have got to have a say in what they're purchasing and what they're doing, and there's got to be competition. Without those two things, we're going to get crap.”
— Rep. Aaron Bean (nypost.com)
“Let's flesh out good ideas. Let's flesh out things as we build a consensus on a health care system that we can afford.”
