India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reportedly said that New Delhi is ready to place orders worth up to $80 billion for Boeing planes, signaling India's willingness to expand trade with the U.S. as part of a recent trade deal between the two countries. Goyal also stated that if engines and other spare parts are added, imports from the U.S. could cross $100 billion just from aircraft purchases.
Why it matters
This potential aircraft deal highlights the growing trade relationship between India and the U.S. following a recent trade agreement. It also comes amid ongoing lawsuits against Boeing over an Air India plane crash that killed 241 people last year.
The details
Goyal said India's demand for aircraft alone, with orders for Boeing "yet to be placed but ready," is nearly $80 billion. He added that if engines and other spare parts are included, imports from the U.S. will "cross 100 billion dollars just [from] aircrafts." The trade deal announced earlier this week includes provisions for the U.S. to reduce tariffs on Indian goods to 18% and for India to lower duties on U.S. goods to zero, as well as for India to replace Russian oil with supply from the U.S. and Venezuela.
- On Monday, within a week of the India-EU trade deal, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the India-U.S. trade deal.
- India and the U.S. will sign a joint statement in the next 3-4 days, finalizing the first tranche of the trade deal.
- A formal agreement will be signed in mid-March, after which the tariff concession for U.S. goods entering India will become effective.

The takeaway
This potential $80 billion aircraft deal highlights the growing trade relationship between India and the U.S. following their recent trade agreement, which aims to reduce tariffs and increase trade between the two countries. However, some experts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of the $500 billion trade target set by the U.S. president.
