UConn women's basketball head coach Geno Auriemma named his dream team of Huskies players he has coached over the years, including Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Breanna Stewart, and Maya Moore. Auriemma explained his reasoning for selecting these five players as the best to ever come through the program.
Why it matters
Auriemma's UConn teams have won 12 NCAA championships, producing an incredible pipeline of WNBA talent. His selection of an all-time Huskies dream team highlights the program's sustained excellence and the individual greatness of some of the best women's basketball players in history.
The details
During an appearance on the 'Hoops HQ' show, Auriemma was asked to name his UConn women's basketball dream team. He started with Sue Bird as the greatest playmaker, Diana Taurasi as the most versatile player, and Tina Charles as the best rebounder. To round out the starting five, Auriemma added Breanna Stewart for her all-around game and Maya Moore for her scoring prowess. Auriemma coached the Olympic team that featured several of these players, making his dream team selection an easy choice.

The players
Geno Auriemma
The legendary head coach of the UConn women's basketball team, leading the Huskies to 12 NCAA championships during his tenure.
Sue Bird
Considered one of the greatest point guards in women's basketball history, Bird played for UConn from 2000-2002 and went on to a storied WNBA career.
Diana Taurasi
A versatile and dominant scorer, Taurasi played for UConn from 2000-2004 and is regarded as one of the best players in the history of the women's game.
Tina Charles
A dominant rebounder and interior presence, Charles played for UConn from 2006-2010 and has gone on to a successful WNBA career.
Breanna Stewart
A four-time NCAA champion at UConn from 2012-2016, Stewart is considered one of the most well-rounded players in the history of the women's game.
Maya Moore
One of the most prolific scorers in UConn history, Moore led the Huskies to two NCAA titles from 2007-2011 before becoming a WNBA superstar.
What they’re saying
“Man, that's a hard one, because we've had such so many great players. If you took it as, you know, Sue Bird is the greatest playmaker, maybe in the history of basketball, college basketball, pro basketball, I don't care. And that Taurasi may be the, whatever you want to describe her as. I think Tina Charles is probably the best rebounder, the best, most forceful kid that we've had in there. And they've played together on the Olympic teams.”
— Geno Auriemma, Head Coach, UConn Women's Basketball (Hoops HQ)
“Stewie [Stewart] being Stewie meshes with everybody and is unguardable and is, you know, at that level, playmaker. That other one, that probably goes to Maya Moore. And it's funny, because I coached that team at the Olympics. So yeah, if somebody said, pick one team, that's the five I would put out.”
— Geno Auriemma, Head Coach, UConn Women's Basketball (Hoops HQ)
The takeaway
Geno Auriemma's selection of his UConn women's basketball dream team showcases the incredible talent and sustained excellence of the Huskies program, which has produced some of the greatest players in the history of the women's game. The combination of playmaking, scoring, rebounding, and all-around talent on this dream team would make them a formidable squad capable of winning a WNBA title.
