Federal immigration agents reportedly surrounded a 33-year-old man's car in New Haven, Connecticut, smashed his passenger-side window, and handcuffed him outside his home. The arrest took place less than two hours before the man was due to appear in court on charges of intending to sexually assault a child.
Why it matters
This incident highlights the controversial tactics used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who have been accused of making arrests in ways that can discourage undocumented immigrants from reporting crimes or showing up for court hearings. The manner of the arrest has also amplified fears among Fair Haven residents, some of whom are undocumented migrants.
The details
According to witnesses, several masked ICE agents in vests surrounded the man's car as he was backing out of his driveway, smashed the passenger-side window, and handcuffed him. The agents then drove the man's car back into the driveway and left his keys and phone inside. The man was scheduled to appear in court that morning on charges of attempt to commit sexual assault, enticing a minor under 18, and risk of injury to a child. He had allegedly contacted an undercover agent posing as the aunt of a 13-year-old girl and asked for photographs and sex.
- The incident took place around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026.
- The man was scheduled to appear in court at 9:45 a.m. that same morning.
