Yale University announced that new undergraduate students from families making under $200,000 a year will receive free tuition, and students from families making under $100,000 a year will have all their education costs waived. The university says this strategic investment is central to its mission of educating exceptional students from all backgrounds.

Why it matters

The move by Yale to significantly expand access to higher education for low and middle-income families is part of a growing trend among prestigious universities to make their campuses more affordable and inclusive. This decision will open the doors of one of the country's top universities to talented students who may have previously been priced out of an Ivy League education.

The details

Under the new policy, Yale will waive all tuition costs for students from families earning less than $100,000 per year, and provide free tuition for those from families making under $200,000 annually. The university previously covered all costs for students from households earning less than $75,000. Yale says this change means nearly half of American families with school-age children will qualify for a no-cost Yale education.

  • The new policy will go into effect for students entering Yale this fall.
