Nebraska baseball improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-4 win over Northeastern on Saturday night at the MLB Desert Invitational in Mesa, Arizona. Sophomore right-hander Carson Jasa struck out nine batters after allowing a 3-RBI double in the second inning, and the Huskers' offense responded with 14 hits to secure the victory.
Why it matters
The win over Northeastern marks a strong start to the season for Nebraska baseball, which is looking to build on its success from last year. The Huskers showcased their offensive depth and resilience, rallying back from an early deficit to take down the Huskies.
The details
After Jasa allowed a 3-RBI double in the second inning to put Nebraska behind 3-1, the Huskers responded with a two-out rally in the top of the third. Senior shortstop Dylan Carey's RBI single and first baseman Case Sanderson's walk set up right fielder Max Buettenback's 2-RBI double to tie the game at 3-3. Senior designated hitter Cole Kitchens then gave Nebraska the lead back with an RBI single. Jasa settled in after that, striking out the next seven batters he faced. Northeastern tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth, but the Huskers answered again with a two-out, two-RBI double from senior third baseman Joshua Overbeek to regain the lead. Nebraska's bullpen then closed out the game, with left-hander Grant Cleavinger, right-hander Ryan Harrahill, and closer Kevin Mannell combining for four scoreless innings.
