Philanthropist and art collector Becky Gochman commissioned a new 6-bedroom, 7-bathroom family home in Telluride, Colorado, turning to designer Sasha Bikoff to create a warm, fun vacation retreat that would showcase the Gochman Family Collection of contemporary Indigenous art. Bikoff designed the home with a tone-on-tone palette pulled from the surrounding landscape, allowing the vibrant, colorful artwork to take center stage.
Why it matters
The Gochman Family Collection operates with a mission to buy work from living Indigenous artists and ensure it is publicly displayed, with 60% of the collection on view at all times. This new Telluride home serves as a showcase for the collection, rotating pieces in and out for exhibitions, scholarly study, and institutional loans to major museums.
The details
Bikoff worked within Telluride's strict historic preservation rules to create a 'textural eclectic chic' design, embracing natural materials like stone, wood, and glass that nod to the town's character. Each bedroom has its own distinct personality, allowing repeat guests to experience something new. The home also includes a guest house loft where visiting artists can stay and create, further concentrating the collection's spirit.
- The house was commissioned in October 2022.
- The home was designed to function as a vacation retreat and showcase for the Gochman Family Collection.

Gochman Family Collection
A lending collection of contemporary Indigenous art, with 60% of the works on public display at all times.
What they’re saying
“There's no other view corridor quite like it.”
— Steve Finger, of FINBRO Construction (ELLE Decor)
“Sixty percent of the collection is on public display at all times, a percentage that we are always trying to up. We try to be a new model here because most collectors have a large percentage of the work they own in storage and it's not available to the public.”
— Becky Gochman (ELLE Decor)
“Contemporary Indigenous art can be vibrant, colorful, poetic and almost has this musical quality to it. This process taught me a lot about practicing restraint in a way that doesn't have to be lackluster or basic.”
— Sasha Bikoff, Designer (ELLE Decor)
“All of the elements empower each other. From the architectural design to the incredible landscape to the art to the interior design, everything contributes to a full experience.”
— Becky Gochman (ELLE Decor)
“If you allow yourself to really see the beauty around you on a project, you can recreate the magic inside.”
— Sasha Bikoff, Designer (ELLE Decor)
What’s next
The Gochman Family Collection plans to continue rotating pieces from the collection through the Telluride home, as well as lending works to major museums for exhibitions.
The takeaway
This project showcases how a thoughtful, nature-inspired design can create the perfect backdrop to highlight a world-class collection of contemporary Indigenous art, while also serving as a vibrant vacation retreat for the homeowners.
