A new USDA-backed program aims to equip American sheep farmers with the tools and data to improve the sustainability and profitability of their operations.Greenwood Village TodayThe American Lamb Board (ALB) has received a USDA grant to help U.S. sheep and lamb producers enhance the profitability and sustainability of their operations. The program will provide up to $23,000 to 150 producers to implement improved management practices such as prescribed grazing, cover cropping, and brush/pest control. Producers will work with technical assistance providers to develop and execute farm plans aimed at boosting productivity and ecosystem services.
Why it matters
This program aligns with ALB's focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship, helping sheep producers strengthen the long-term resilience of their operations through data-driven best practices. By tying these land management improvements to measurable productivity gains, the program supports the industry's commitment to providing a wholesome, affordable, and sustainable product.
The details
Producers accepted into the program will work with a Technical Assistance (TA) Provider to establish operational plans, implement recommended changes, and organize farm data to identify best management practices. Eligible practices include prescribed grazing, cover cropping, range planting, tree/shrub enhancement, silvopasture, cross-fencing, and brush/pest management. Producers must meet certain eligibility criteria, such as establishing Farm Records with the USDA and agreeing to share data. Priority will be given to small, underserved, and limited-resource producers.
- Applications for the program are open through May 1, 2026.
- Accepted producers will be notified by June 1, 2026.
- The program for each producer will run from the time they file eligibility documents through September 30, 2028.
