According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), the incident began just after 4:15 a.m. Sunday, February 1, when a deputy noticed a vehicle without headlights or a visible license plate near East 57th Street and North Garfield Avenue in Loveland. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly turned off all lights and sped away. Deputies pursued the vehicle for several miles as it allegedly reached speeds of up to 120 mph northbound on I-25. The pursuit exited at Mountain Vista, with the vehicle continuing east on Vine Drive/Weld County Road 84. Investigators said the driver later lost control near the intersection of Pheasant Crest Drive and Weld County Road 84, where the vehicle struck a power pole and rolled over. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. A third occupant, a woman, was extricated from the vehicle and taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Why it matters
High-speed chases can pose a significant risk to public safety, and this incident highlights the need for law enforcement to carefully weigh the potential dangers of pursuing a fleeing vehicle against the potential benefits. The crash also raises questions about the use of intervention techniques by law enforcement to safely stop a high-speed pursuit.
The details
According to the LCSO, deputies did not make contact with the vehicle or use any intervention techniques before the crash. The LCSO CRASH Team and Forensics Unit processed the scene, and the Weld County Coroner's Office will release the identities of the two men at a later time.
