Food Bank of the Rockies (FBR) celebrated the grand opening of its new 270,000-square-foot distribution center on Thursday. The facility, located in Aurora, Colorado, will allow FBR to double its cold storage, triple volunteer capacity, quadruple kitchen space, and increase storage by over 50%. FBR officials say the new center will save the organization $500,000 annually and enable them to distribute 50% more food to meet record-high demand.
Why it matters
The new distribution center comes at a critical time, as FBR has seen a spike in need for its services due to the recent government shutdown and SNAP benefit pause. The expanded facility will allow FBR to be more efficient, increase the quality and cultural relevance of the food it distributes, and better serve vulnerable populations across Colorado and Wyoming.
The details
The new distribution center features shelves of food towering to the ceiling and space for over 50 semi-trucks. It will allow FBR to accommodate up to 300 volunteers per day, a major increase from the previous 100-volunteer capacity. The facility also includes expanded cold storage, quadrupled kitchen space, and increased storage capacity by over 50%. FBR CEO Erin Pulling says the new center means the organization can 'be more deliberate and purposeful with how we serve and the type of food we're serving'.
