Sugar and Spice Books, Boulder's first romance-only bookstore, has opened its doors near the Pearl Street Mall. The shop is the second of its kind in Colorado, following the opening of The Spicy Librarian in Denver in 2025. Owned by Superior resident Hannah Morgan, the new store aims to cater to the booming romance genre and its dedicated readership, which has seen significant growth during the pandemic. In addition to traditionally published titles, Sugar and Spice will feature books from smaller presses and self-published authors, with a focus on highlighting Colorado writers.
Why it matters
The opening of Sugar and Spice Books reflects the surging popularity of romance novels, particularly among younger readers on social media platforms like BookTok. This specialized bookstore provides a dedicated space for romance fans to discover new titles and authors, while also supporting local and independent writers in the genre.
The details
Sugar and Spice Books is located at 1901 9th St., Unit 125, in Boulder. Owner Hannah Morgan, a former clinical laboratory scientist, had previously launched an online romance bookstore called Fated Mates Books before deciding to open a brick-and-mortar location. Finding the right retail space in Boulder proved challenging, with Morgan facing rejection from one landlord who was "worried about the optics of a romance bookstore." The new shop replaces Multivogue, a women's clothing store, and offers ample space for author events, book clubs, and other romance-themed programming.
- Sugar and Spice Books held its grand opening on February 7, 2026.
