According to a memoir written by a man born in Valley Center in 1872, Mrs. Brubaker took the reins of a horse-drawn wagon from Valley Center to Escondido and back every day, carrying mail and passengers on the zig-zag dirt route known as the Valley Center Grade. She operated the 'Bear Valley Stage Line' coach, which was built in 1850 and had previously served as a Civil War ambulance before being brought to Valley Center.
