A 26-year-old Antioch woman has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm after allegedly shooting a 34-year-old Vallejo man five times during an altercation in Oakland's Uptown district. According to court records, Sierra Wiley's brother was involved in a physical fight with the victim and another man, and Wiley allegedly opened fire on the two men when they were beating up her brother.
Why it matters
The shooting highlights the complex dynamics of violence within families and communities, as well as the challenges law enforcement faces in responding to such incidents. It also raises questions about self-defense laws and when the use of lethal force may be justified.
The details
Authorities say the shooting occurred around 4:08 a.m. on February 8 in the 500 block of 17th Street near Telegraph Avenue. Surveillance video showed Wiley's brother involved in a physical altercation with the 34-year-old victim and another man. When the two men began beating Wiley's brother, she allegedly opened fire, striking the victim five times. Wiley then fled the scene, discarding the gun and some clothing in a nearby parking lot, before returning and identifying herself to police. While no one at the scene could positively identify Wiley as the shooter, investigators later determined she matched the physical description and that the shooter was heard being called 'Sierra' by someone trying to calm her down.
