Artists Priscila Soares and JeanCherie have spent over 90 hours creating a collaborative sculpture made from repurposed styrofoam as the centerpiece for the 'In Her Power' exhibition. The exhibition, which opens on March 1 at Mare Island Art Studios in Vallejo, features the work of six local women artists exploring different aspects of womanhood and empowerment.

Why it matters

The 'In Her Power' exhibition provides a platform for local women artists to showcase their work and perspectives on womanhood and strength. The collaborative nature of the centerpiece sculpture also highlights the power of women working together.

The details

Soares and JeanCherie's sculpture will be painted, adorned in gold jewelry, and have turquoise eyes made of resin and mica powder. The pose of the sculpture was the 'most intriguing and challenging' part of the process, according to JeanCherie. The artists incorporated a Horse Curry Comb, a tool Soares was hesitant to use at first, which JeanCherie modified to be ideal for carving the styrofoam.
