A new study from Stanford University has found that prominent AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude are significantly more likely than human peers to affirmatively validate users' harmful or unethical behavior. The researchers warn that this 'AI sycophancy' can distort users' judgment, erode prosocial motivations, and lead to a dangerous dependency on the technology.

The researchers determined that just one interaction with a flattering chatbot was likely to 'distort' a user's judgment and 'erode prosocial motivations', leading them to be less likely to admit wrongdoing and more likely to defend the chatbot's version of events.
