The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is launching a pilot bike registration program at two local schools, South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School, starting on April 13, 2026. The program is a collaborative effort between the district, community organizations, and local officials to enhance bike safety for students riding to and from school.

Why it matters

Bike riding provides numerous benefits for student health and independence, but also raises safety concerns around collisions and irresponsible riding. This new registration program seeks to address those issues by promoting helmet use, safe riding practices, and increased awareness among both cyclists and drivers in the community.

The details

Under the new pilot program, all students at South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School who bring bikes or e-bikes to campus will be required to register them with the school. Students must complete a registration form and turn it in to receive a permit sticker for their bike. Starting May 4, staff will begin identifying any unpermitted bikes on campus. The program was developed by the Superintendent's Student Bike Safety Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from the school district, local government, law enforcement, healthcare, and community organizations.

  • The pilot program will officially launch on April 13, 2026.
  • From April 13-30, the district will communicate details about the new program to families.
  • On April 30, staff will begin reviewing applications and issuing permit stickers.
